The story behind our smoke sauna
Kärt had a vision of a village smoke sauna large enough to fit all saunagoers, big and small, on the platform. This bold and daring dream leaped from an idea into reality in 2024, and a large, authentic smoke sauna with two heaters and no chimney rose on the clayey shores of Lake Näkijärve. The sauna was built according to traditional principles and created with care and love by masters from Viljandimaa (SalaMaja OÜ). The platform comfortably fits 14 people, but can accommodate up to 20 when sitting close together.
The smoke sauna is accompanied by the cozy Teetare (Tea House), where steaming bodies can watch the fireplace, refresh themselves with tea, and stretch out on sheepskins.
The sauna terrace is a great place to do cartwheels, take in the fresh air, or go stargazing. On the second floor of the building, there are also two sleeping rooms for nesting and catching some shut-eye.
Want to experience the Vana-Kaasiku smoke sauna? Join one of our public village sauna nights or book a private smoke sauna experience for your group.
We invite you to a meeting with fire, water, steam, and yourself.
About the smoke sauna experience
The smoke sauna as a sacred place. A place where ancestors have gone to cleanse both body and soul. A place where we greet the sauna spirit upon entering. A place where warmth reaches the bones and deep relaxation fills the body. Where the soul finds nourishment and the mind finds release.
We offer the opportunity for a traditional smoke sauna experience here.
- The sauna session is guided by a sauna woman
- Duration up to 4 hours
- Opportunity to dip into the lake or go for a swim
- We provide: sauna sheets and towels, sauna hats, whisks, herbal tea, and drinking water; a light fruit snack for refreshment after the sauna
- We use ash, salt, herbs, honey, and other interesting elements for cleansing and support
- A sacred place with no room for alcohol, substances, or harsh words
- Simple conditions: an outdoor toilet for relief, a sauna and tea house without electricity, washing with bowls of warm water in the sauna; during wet weather, the path to the sauna may be muddy
If you feel called to take part in a journey into yourself within the smoke sauna space, sign up and come over. The experience is beyond words.
About the sauna woman
Sauna woman Maia Pruuli offers the chance to experience the authentic depth of the smoke sauna through her guidance. She welcomes you, supports you throughout the session, and sees you off on your journey home. While a smoke sauna might seem dark or intimidating to some at first, Maia helps you relax into the sauna’s warm embrace and let the wind blow everyday thoughts from your head.
Drawing on the teachings of sauna mistress Helen Moppel and sauna expert Eda Veeroja, she guides you to find a connection with yourself, to finish and let go of the old, and to move forward feeling pure, clear, and lighter. In addition to medicinal herbs and whisks, spring water, ash, salt, sauna honey, and occasionally other interesting elements help wash both body and soul.
Maia lives through the sauna herself and believes that the smoke sauna can help and support all stages of life, as it is a sacred place. Whether you need to welcome a new life or let go of a finished cycle, celebrate a marriage, healing, successful cooperation, or something else entirely. Individuals, couples, families, groups of friends, and corporate teams are all welcome to the guided sauna.

Feedback from saunagoers
“A large and spacious room that creates a very inclusive feeling – you can be together. Very good, strong steam and a large pond that carries and cleanses heat-filled bodies just like an ocean.”
Saunagoer Boris Ümarik
“Vana-Kaasiku smoke sauna is a few years old, an idyllically inviting sauna where the pleasantly spacious steam room has a wide platform and two singing heaters with wonderful steam. There is a large sheltered area with a terrace for sitting outside. There is a separate room for drinking tea and two chambers in the attic for resting your head. The building is surrounded by a pond on three sides.”
Saunagoer Jaan Prost-Kängsepp
“It’s just so nice to be at Vana-Kaasiku – there is total peace and a slow flow. The smoke sauna always holds and carries you! The sauna itself is pleasantly spacious, fitting many good souls. There is space to cool down in the sauna’s anteroom, outside in the fresh air, or in the pond in front of the sauna. Everything is there; you just have to show up and let the sauna and the place work their magic.”
Saunagoer Triinu Hansen
“Time disappears when visiting the smoke sauna at Vana-Kaasiku in its peaceful and ancient rhythm. The senses are heightened, as if you’ve been washed clean from the inside. A very grounding experience.”
